What is the history of Sugar Land?
The history of Sugar Land can be traced back to the early days of Texas' history when Stephen F. Austin first brought 300 American families to settle in Texas. The fertile land of what became Fort Bend County was favorable to many agricultural crops, including sugar cane. Through the years that followed, sugar cane production led to the building of the state's first sugar mill and eventually a sugar refinery. This refinery was purchased in 1908 by the Imperial Sugar Company, who developed the area into a company town for its' employees and their families to live, work and play. You can learn even more about Sugar Land's history from the Sugar Land Heritage Foundation.
